Gig Review

Houston & Crashdiet, Serpentine, Vega & Miss Behaviour @ O2 Islington Academy 4th May 2011

After covering so many metal bands lately, I fancied covering something completely different and seeing Houston & Crashdiet performing in London this week I couldn’t resist.

To be honest I wasn’t sure what to expect, this isn’t really a genre I know much about but after checking out their myspaces’ I knew it would be a fun gig.

On arrival it was amusing to see the Guestlist line longer than the ticket one, but eventually we got in. It was then I realised the first band was already on, an early start for the venue tonight. Luckily I was able to get a few snaps of the first band as photo policy is ‘first three songs only’.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:ezine:may:gig_review:Houston & Crashdiet, Serpentine:1. Miss Behaviour.jpg

First band on was ‘Miss Behaviour’ a Melodic Hard Rock from Norrköping, Sweden.
I missed the first half of their set but they seemed to have good energy tonight, despite the small crowd they were playing to.
Coming to the end of their UK Tour these guys had great stage presence, playing tracks from their new album ‘Last Woman Standing’ which was just released this month.
Despite the small crowd these guys had a great response and the crowd clearly loved them.

Second band on was’Vega’. I’ve not heard of this band before & despite doing some searching online myspace/facebook it was impossible finding anything, so I have no idea where they are based or their music background.
There was a slight delay due to technical problems as they were supposed to come on stage to an instrumental intro but it seemed to have finished before the members arrived on stage, so they had to play it again but with the members finally on stage the intro kept going, which was actually quite amusing, with no-one really knowing what to do!

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:ezine:may:gig_review:Houston & Crashdiet, Serpentine:2. Vega.jpg

As I was taking photos I also noticed the bass player having technical probs with his lead, which kept falling out, but he managed to play well despite the annoyance.
I felt the band slightly lacked stage presence, with no interaction towards the crowd.
They did manage to pick up the energy towards the end of their set & tried to make up for the bad beginning, but the crowd’s reaction was great when they were finished so all was well in the end!

Third band on was Serpentine, who are based in Cardiff/Birmingham in the UK and after chatting to the guys they seem to be a really nice friendly bunch!
These guys had a really great stage presence; with all members posing great for the camera’s and they managed to keep the crowd’s energy up!
From what I have heard from this band previously I’ve really liked, and glad I have got to see them live!

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:ezine:may:gig_review:Houston & Crashdiet, Serpentine:3. Serpentine.jpg

They have recently got a new vocalist ‘Matt Black’ who managed to perform their old songs well, which isn’t always easy for a new vocalist!
Their set seemed to go fast and they were definitely something different from tonight’s line-up but everyone seemed happy, so all was good!
They have a new album out later this year, which I look forward I will definitely give that a listen.

All the members had great energy tonight & interacted well with the crowd.

I wasn’t expecting there to be 5 bands on tonight, especially as I needed to get the last train home!
But it wasn’t long until Forth Swedish based band ‘Houston’ exploded onto the stage!

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:ezine:may:gig_review:Houston & Crashdiet, Serpentine:4. Houston.jpg

Coming on stage was vocalist ‘Hank Erix’ wearing a Boxing Robe to the theme of ‘Rocky’, there was no doubt these guys know how to put on a show!
Playing an awesome tight set, these guys have a fantastic stage presence, showing  a close bond with each other, aswell as great chemistry, which was surprising considering the band only have two official members; ‘Hank Erix’, and ‘Freddie Allen’, with the other guys only joining for their tour.

They played great!
Also joining them on stage tonight was female vocalist ‘Emma Stockton Divine’ who joined them half way through their set to sing a duet with ‘Hank Erix’, which was pretty amazing.

With all the members bouncing off each other, and posing great for the photographers, the audience loved them and it was no surprise to see the venue becoming full, these guys were totally brilliant!
Towards the end of their set the band left with a bang; by firing silver paper into the air, which would’ve been a great way to have ended the night really, but there was still more to come!

Finally Crashdiet blasted onto the stage!
These Sleaze/Glam rockers from Sweden were totally fantastic and it was obvious from the crowds’ reaction that this was the band they were waiting to see.
With vocalist Simon "Simme" reminding me of 80’s ‘Billy Idol’ there is no doubt these guys know how to entertain the crowd!

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:ezine:may:gig_review:Houston & Crashdiet, Serpentine:5. Crashdiet.jpg

The energy from these guys was amazing and this clearly reflected within the audiences’ reaction, with screams and cheers throughout their set with most of the fans singing along and clearly knowing all their songs!
Unfortunately due to the time and being determined to get the last train home I wasn’t able to watch their full set, but from what I did see really impressed me.

These guys are a band u have to see live and it is surprising seeing them play such a small venue as they really did deserve a larger audience, but this may have been down to them playing on a Wednesday night!
This is definitely one genre of music I need to expand on.

Leaving early also meant I had to turn down the after-party invite, and seeing the energy from the bands tonight, I bet it was a great one!

Gig Review

Anterior, Xerath, The Safety Fire, Subversion @ Camden Barfly

9th May 2011 @ London  Barfly

Sonic Promotions Presents by Arrangement with Sonic Mutilation.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Downloads:attachments_24_05_2011(1):Flyer.jpg

Anterior - http://www.myspace.com/anterior
Xerath - http://www.myspace.com/xerath
The Safety Fire - http://www.myspace.com/thesafetyfire
Subversion - http://www.myspace.com/svsnband
There was no doubt tonight was going to be a great gig, with the current line-up, especially seeing Xerath who have just released their new album and never seeing these guys before I was looking forward to seeing what tonight held!

The barfly is a small, intimate venue but very comfortable with large bar, seating area with the gig venue upstairs.
I was quite surprised seeing these guys perform here, due to the small size of the place.

First on was UK band ‘Subversion’; a six piece metal band from London.
I’ve seen these guys’ play afew times now and I have to say they just get better and better!
Despite the small crowd they played amazingly and their stage presence is amazing!
They were definitely on top form tonight with vocalist ‘Spencer Haynes’ growls echoing throughout the room, as well as some great backing vocals from ‘Kai Giritli’ and ‘Chaz Barnes’ who was also sporting a new hair cut!
Despite looking slightly squashed on a small stage all six members played a great set tonight and it was great to hear them play new tracks from their recently released album ‘Lest We Forget’, which included the track ‘Treason’.
Towards the middle of their set, the place started to fill up and these guys had a great audience reaction, it was clear they had fans here tonight.
They even managed to start a two-man mosh pit which was quite amusing and I had a feeling this was just a taste of things to come, such a great start to the night!
It was a shame these guys were first on, with a shorter time limit as I was really enjoying their set.

Second band on was ‘The Safety Fire’; a five piece Progressive Metal band from London.
The band only formed in 2006 and has recently released an EP, but I have to say these guys really didn’t do it for me.
I have listened to their stuff online and thought they sounded better than they did live tonight.
Maybe it was their genre that I wasn’t feeling, bit too metalcore for me, or the vocals maybe? Or maybe it was their lack of stage presence? Or lack of originality? Or it could’ve been the checked shirt worn by vocalist ‘Sean McWeeney’, I never trust a guy who wears checkered shirts!
Was a shame really cause despite the screaming vocals, the clean vocals showed that ‘Sean McWeeney’ does actually have a pretty good voice.
But I really didn’t think these guys fitted onto the bill tonight, given the rest of the line-up.
They did have some interesting melodies, and I enjoyed the music much more than the style of singing, but I did enjoy their set more towards the end.
But they didn’t come close to the energy and level set by ‘Subversion’ and I think the audience reaction showed the same, sorry guys.

Third band on was Xerath, an absolutely amazing four piece band from UK, who have just released their second album ‘II’ on Candlelight records.
This was the band I had come to see tonight!

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Downloads:attachments_24_05_2011(1):Xerath.jpg

I seriously cannot put into words how amazing these guys are.
They have such immense stage presence, amazing aggressive vocals by ‘Richard Thomson’ with all members playing a fantastic tight set throughout and impressive guitaring from ‘Owain Williams’, these guys did not disappoint.
With the crowds’ reaction tonight it was obvious a lot of people had turned up to see these guys play as the crowd went crazy for them, with metallers flying everywhere, creating an impressive mosh pit with the rest of us trying to find safe corners to hide in.
Again, its surprising seeing these guys play on such a small stage and I’m looking forward to seeing them play again at the end of the week, supporting ‘Anaal Nathrakh’!
But despite the small stage, the intimacy definitely makes up for it and towards the end of their set the crowd went crazy and all you could see where metal horns in the air, a great response from everyone.
‘Xerath’ are most definitely a band you need to see live and I definitely recommend purchasing their new album!

Last band on tonight was ‘Anterior’; a five piece Melodic Death Metal band from Glasgow.
These guys have known each other for awhile now, with them first releasing a self funded demo in the summer of 2004 and last year the band completed writing for their second album, it wasn’t long for them to get an impressive fan base.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Downloads:attachments_24_05_2011(1):Anterior.jpg

I’ve not seen these guys perform before but seeing as the energy was high and everyone rushing to the stage and shouting their names,  before the guys had even come on, I assumed they were going to be good….I wasn’t wrong!
These guys are just amazing live and put on a fantastic show tonight.
The growls coming from ‘Luke Davies’ were more than impressive and all members played perfectly and interacted with the crowd well.
Again there was no chance of getting close to the stage with metallers flying around everywhere again, with the room turning into one massive mosh pit!
It is clear this band is loved! With the crowd showing their appreciation to each and every song and with ‘Luke Davies’ talking to the crowd in between their songs, it kept the energy high, but despite not hearing everything he was saying I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever heard so many ‘fuckings’ in one night, but it was ‘fucking’ awesome!
Such a fantastic way to end the night, with all bands being amazing…apart from one.
Many thanks to Owain Williams for putting me on the guestlist last minute!

Danish Metal Festival

COPENHELL AWAITS!

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:download-4.jpg

COPENHELL - The first big, outdoor metal festival in Denmark - the country that among other things dear to metal heads gave you the drums of Metallica and bands like King Diamond and Volbeat. On the 17th and 18th of June the gates of COPENHELL will – for the second time – open for a two day metal feast with 16 bands performing on two stages.

The program consists of proven cumbersome and genre-creating names like Judas Priest (UK), KORN (US), Opeth (SE), Morbid Angel (US), Mayhem (NO), KYUSS Lives! (US), Deicide (US), GWAR (US), Anvil (CAN), All That Remains (CAN), and 'young' bands showing the scenes of 2011 – Doctor Midnight & The Mercy Cult (SCANDINAVIA), Protest The Hero (US), Baptized in Blood (US), Kvelertak (NO), Rolo Tomasi (UK) and The Burning (DK), to name a few. Expect thrash, nu, speed, power, doom, prog, death, black, and a little something in between.

Like last year, the festival is situated in the raw and atmospheric terrain of Refshaleøen close to downtown Copenhagen. “As for the placement of festival in the city of Copenhagen, in the part that blends nature with abounded factories and harbor buildings was just a truly fabulous setting for this kind of festival,“ wrote e-zine Metal Revolution.

COPENHELL is more than just music. In the entire festival area the metal culture is thriving with all kinds of bizarre and alternative performances. A man suspended from hooks through the skin and fire eating girls in hot pants were part of COPENHELL 2010, and 2011 is set to be populated with even more weird and wonderful attractions. When the music stops, people hang out at the site or in the large beer tent Biergarten. Here you can compete in death karaoke or just guzzle and rant, while DJs pamper the ears with metal old and new. Together with documentary film institute CPH:DOX you can enter the DOX:HELL cinema, watching metal documentaries and some metal-friendly blockbusters in the cinema located in the old wharf buildings. Every time a band takes to the stage, a 35 meter flame will be shot into the air, literally putting COPENHELL on the Copenhagen horizon.

Last year the festival's mascot was designed by Joe Petagno, well known for making illustrations for Motörhead and many others. This year, Ed Repka – who is behind the covers of Death, Venom and the most classic albums with one of last year's headliners Megadeth - has taken over the black feather. The Copenhagen plague epidemic in 1711 that killed a quarter of the city's population inspired Ed to draw our new friend, COPENHELLs mascot 2011: 'Plague Doctor'.

This black-clad guy is most easily recognized by his plague mask protecting him from infection and to relieve him from the stench of corpses in the streets. In addition he has in one hand a little spear for blood-letting, and in the other a torch to burn the corpses that have not been dragged out of town. He is, in other words, ready for COPENHELL.

The price of it all is 595 DKK. Of course camping near the site is possible. You can buy a tent package for two for 895 DKK. including a tent, two sixpacks and breakfast for saturday and sunday. Travel is really easy – go by car, bus 40 from Copenhagen City Hall Square.

Dark 7 Festival @ Underworld, Camden - Sunday 17th April 2011

Review: Linderella Perrini
Photos curtsey of: Arcadia Noir

Description: :::::Downloads:attachments_19_05_2011:Dark 7 Festival.jpg

Dark 7 festival hosted at Camden’s Underworld, an 8 hour party of local talent playing EBM, techno trance and industrial. The day had a real festival vibe with everyone drinking, dancing and socialising.

The opening act of the event was Ghost in the Static a 5 piece from Bracknell. Although the crowd was relatively small at this stage of the event, with people slowly filtering in the boys totally ripped up the stage with their Electro-industrial Metal. Even Cease2xist joined them to belt out a Prodigy cover.

Cease2Xist provide the next part of the evening’s entertainment, describing themselves as Industrial Electro Punks, but playing a sound more akin to Industrial and Techno, but the vocals had a strong and very in your face Punk and Hardcore edge. They did what they did really well with great stage presence & very energetic and the crowed seem to love them!

Description: :::::Downloads:attachments_19_05_2011:Dark 7 Festival (3).jpg

Global citizen were the surprise highlight of the evening, with their heavily Gary Numan influenced sounds. Although it seemed at first the audience didn’t really know what to make of them, by the end of their set everyone was moving, dancing and wanting more.
Not surprisingly Global Citizen was the only band asked for an encore!

As headliners of the night System:fx did not let us down,.
The dance floor was packed with some cyber bouncing away and going crazy at the front. Even the boys from Cease2xist and Ghost in the Static couldn’t resist storming the stage in the final song “Turn To Rust”
The aftermath...Everyone I spoke to, during and after the festival and preceded to add on facebook, commented on how friendly and social day it had been and what a good festival vibe.

*DAY TICKET BALLOT SCHEME REVEALED *
* SIGN UP AT WWW.SONISPHEREFESTIVALS.COM TO
ENROL IN THE DAY TICKET POWER BALLOT
*
SONISPHERE FESTIVAL organisers have issued the following statement regarding day tickets for the 2011 event:

In response to an overwhelming number of requests, we have been able to secure permission to put a strictly limited number of day tickets on sale via THE POWER BALLOT scheme.  Due to the huge demand for day tickets anticipated, and the limited number that can be made available, we have decided to use a ballot system as we believe it is the fairest way to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to obtain tickets.

Fans should sign up at www.sonispherefestivals.com/uk before 23rd May, when the ballot closes. You may apply for as many days as you like in order to increase your chances, although full weekend tickets work out much cheaper than three separate day tickets, and is the best way to enjoy all that SONISPHERE has to offer and get the full festival experience.

Successful applicants will be informed which day(s) they can purchase tickets for via email on May 25th. Each customer may purchase up to four tickets for their allocated day. Tickets will be £80/day plus booking fee.

The day splits are listed below, broken down by stage, from the APOLLO and SATURN ARENA stages - timed to ensure no clashes so people can watch every main stage performance - to the BOHEMIA, JAGERMEISTER and RED BULL BEDROOM JAM stages, considerately timed to avoid any painful choices over the course of the weekend.

SONISPHERE Festival was established in 2009 and received the award "Best New Festival' at the 2009 UK Festival Awards. That year the festival visited six different European countries, taking in Holland, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Finland and England, making it the world’s largest internationally touring festival. 2010 saw SONISPHERE make metal history by bringing metal’s BIG 4 - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax - together for the first time, and taking yet more awards, with Festival promoters Kilimanjaro Live and K2 awarded European Promoter Of The Year at the 2010 European Festival Awards, the Finnish event receiving the Best Festival In Finland Summer 2010 in one of the country’s biggest newspapers, Ilta Sanomat, plus a shortlisting at the Digital Music Awards for the live cinecast of the Bulgarian SONISPHERE. It also sold its millionth ticket as a festival in 2010, an impressive milestone for such a young festival.

Now, just two years after its inception, SONISPHERE Festival has doubled to twelve European countries and has become the world’s foremost festival tour.  This year headliners across Europe include Iron Maiden, Metallica, Linkin Park and Slipknot, with the three day UK event at KNEBWORTH boasting headline sets from The BIG 4, BIFFY CLYRO and SLIPKNOT, leaving no doubt that SONISPHERE is the world's greatest international festival. Triosphere

I fight my way backstage after getting an almost indecipherable call from Ida, I'm there to have a chat with her and the rest of Triosphere about just exactly why they're one of Norway's best kept secrets!

AM: How was that for you?
Ida: It was great! Tight space on stage, but a little more difficult to do our thing, but always awesome to be onstage!

AM: Is this your first time in the UK?
Ida: Yes, we had our first show in a place called Dudley (cue groans from all around the room, including myself). We're very eager to tour here at all.

AM: You're with Sonata now until...
Marius: 1st April...we have two more here, and then we go back to Germany and The Netherlands.

AM: You're pretty busy, because after that in May...you're in with Crimson Glory.
Ida: *quiet squeal* That's more in Germany, Switzerland, Italy...

AM: You've been around for quite a while. How come you're so low key, considering you've been around with Arch Enemy, Destruction, WASP...
Marius: The first record was released on a small label, so we had to build up from there. Now that the second record is out on a bigger label, stuff has just started to happen. We started doing really well in Norway...we started touring Europe with Kamelot, WASP and Dio and we just felt the distribution wasn't really working. We needed a bigger and better label.

AM: How did you get from Norwegian only release of Onwards to worldwide?
Ida: Onwards was released in a collaboration with Plastic Head, it was very limited and didn't work too well. We've been trying to build and taking care of all the connections we possibly could.
Marius: We were touring with Destruction, and their main man Schmier, he got us on to AFM which is where they were at the time. He wanted us to be label mates!

AM:What are you guys up to for the rest of the summer? Hitting any of the festivals?
Marius: We're doing Wacken, and the Female Metal Voices Fest in Belgium...and a few other festivals before we'll go back and start working on new material. We've started writing, but we haven't actually got to the point where we're ready to record.

AM: Going back all the way to 2004, how did you guys get together? Let's hear the full story!
Ida: Well, I'll give you the speed version. Me and Marius, just by chance worked together on a thrash metal project which was really cool and we decided we wanted to form a band of our own...before I met him I'd been singer with our drummer for ten or eleven years, so it was quite natural to ask him to join in. Everything just went really well, we came together after just a few days and we started rehearsing songs that he (points to Marius) had written. Before we knew it, we'd done a demo which we sent to that Norwegian label...who picked it up quickly. We just kept on writing material...and went to the studio in 2006. We contacted Tor, our other guitarist...

AM: You still feel like the new boy in the band, after 5 years?
Triosphere: *laughing*
Tor: No...sometimes because people asked why I wasn't on the first...
Marius: But it's like why Ron Wood is always the new guy in the Rolling Stones, even though he's been there 40 years!

AM: You're from Trondheim, which is most famous for Keep of Kalessin, and some guy who won the Norweigan version of Pop Idol.
Marius: The guy who won that isn't from Trondheim, he's actually from Bergen.
Whether this is just damage control or not, I have no idea. Let's face it, no one wants to be linked to Pop Idol, least of all a Norwegian metal band!
Markus: Keep of Kalessin I knew before, they're actually really good friends of ours. To your previous question, the thrash metal project...that was my project put together with those guys. Their drummer actually introduced me to Ida.

AM: Did that ever see the light of day?
Marius:  We did a few gigs and record an EP...but nothing really happened. We still have the band, but we don't really have the time.

AM: So, support bands get a fair bit of free time...what do you guys get up to?
Ida: Well, I have a lot of stuff going on at school...I'm studying law, for me it's not even a question...it's just work!

AM : So when the boys get into trouble you can bail them out?
Ida: Exactly, haha! *rest of Triosphere look around guiltily*

AM: And the guys?
Marius: We try to get out as much as we can, we try and get to know the rest of the bands, so we hang out a lot with them. Labyrinth are really great guys

AM:  Any rivalry between you and the Finnish?
Marius: Drinking contests!

AM: Who wins?
Marius: Well...they do!
Ørjan: I think we're going bowling on the next day off.
Ida: You really should mention your photography, Ørjan!
Ørjan: I'm an amateur! It's just the band site, I don't have a personal one yet.
Ida:  He's our link to the outside. Sometimes we stay inside the venue...and we'd been playing in Lyons and he disappeared. He came back and said "I found a giraffe! And a panther!"

AM: It keeps you sane on the road, then.
Marius: We always try to have a look around the city we're in, but we've not had time today sadly.

AM: What's the big dream, then?
Ida: Well, we know we have to take it bit by bit. The way the music scene is now I don't think you'll ever wake up one morning and you'll be huge. I think our ambition are of course to do this, and to pay bills at the same time! We want a chance to play cool concerts and meet a lot of people.

AM: The new record has a very positive message, compared to the thrashier sound of the debut.
Marius:  Life's been better the last couple of years! We've been touring a lot and you just end up writing more positive stuff, you gotta write what comes naturally.

AM: So when you get even bigger, the next one's going to be about unicorns and rainbows then?
At that suggestion, I was promptly thrown out of the band's dressing room for implying they'd turn into tree-hugging pixies. You can check out their new album, The Road Less Travelled, now on AFM Records

 Chinwag

A Chat with Steve Dagg at Scorpio Tattoo, Selby.

I like a bit of ink me … and like Pringles and high grade amphetamines, once you pop you can’t stop.
My preferred port of call, when it comes to any idea about getting a cool picture on some excruciatingly painful place, is Scorpio Tattoo in Selby.
Run by Steve Dagg (tattooist) and his missus, Debbie (Designs, advice and front desk,) Scorpio has been going from strength to strength over the last 5 years with Steve’s art and dedication earning him high praise among the tattooed denizens of this quiet market town.
So, when I decided to have some Tyla artwork permanently etched into my chest, I thought I’d ask Steve a few question about his work while I was there. Cue tape!

Hi Steve, oww! So, how did you get started?
I worked for Thomo, at Ruby Arts in York, as he needed someone on his front desk. The front desk is as important as the back room, because if you don’t have all your art, paperwork and times sorted out, the tattooist can’t work properly. So, as I was a good people person, and not bad at the old drawing, I made myself indispensible, then said ‘Ok, now I want to be a tattooist.’.  Thomo said ‘On yer bike, I don’t wanna teach anyone’. So, I threatened to leave and, because I was a good front desk person, he agreed to teach me.

Had you always fancied being a tattooist?
I’d always wanted to be a tattooist. I just never had the opportunity or time. I’d had a few goes at what we call ‘scratching’ on mates and that, but nothing serious. Saying that, it was when I was doing that, my mates said ‘It’s about time you did this for real y’know’.

Did you find it easy once you got into it?
No! I was the hardest thing I ever did. When I first started I had to apologise to people because I sweating that much. It was pure fear, fear that I’d not do it right. Your first customer is a nightmare. I told mine I had a fever so he wouldn’t wonder why I was sweating so much. I still get a bit of a dab on these days if what I’m doing is a bit tricky.

What designs did you first ink commercially?
Japanese symbol, or a rose, simple stuff to start with.  Start slow, and you’ll learn right. No point starting with something complicated because you WILL get it wrong.

And, what was the first tattoo you got?
A skull with a top hat on and the word ‘freedom’ – I was 18 and it was on my arm. There wasn’t much choice in them days! Then I had a skull with a dagger and A Place In Hell. I still have them, didn’t cover ‘em up. You can’t read ‘em now, like.

What is it you enjoy about tattooing?
Everything. Talking to people, having the craic is the best bit. I’ve only tattooed about half a dozen people I couldn’t wait to get out of the chair.  I treat everyone the same, but some people you just really don’t want back.

Do think there’s a difference working in a small town like Selby than in a big city studio?
I love working here. I could go to a city if I wanted, but you build a clientele up in a place like this, and a lot of my customers become like friends. Which makes it awkward charging them sometime!

Do you find the diversity of work is still there?
Yep, people will always want their own personal designs and not what I wanna give ‘em!

And what would they have if you were choosing the designs?
They’d all have Japanese Body Suits, or Rockabilly type suits.

Why?
I just find them very interesting to do. You can make them so different … plus, I think the Japanese work just has that ‘wow’ factor. I do a lot of cover-ups for older gents in the Japanese style. It covers great and looks fantastic.  That makes you feel good too - some fella hasn’t been able to take his shirt of for years, because he’s embarrassed by his crap tats, then I give him something to be proud of … you can’t buy that kind of satisfaction.

You mentioned Rockabilly type tats. Do you think they’re making a comeback?
Yep, definitely, that and the American Gaff stuff. The rockabilly is the new style of an old idea though. It’s the next generation doing their thing isn’t it? I know people making very good living just doing that style – especially people who work in big cities.

Do you find clients are still mostly male?
No, not at all. It’s probably half and half going toward more girls. And it’s not little cutesy stuff, these are big pieces. Plus, the range of professionals is incredible, police officers, prison guards, nurses – everything.  5 years ago it wasn’t like this, it’s was mostly blokes, but the mix is fantastic these days. Which reflects the increasing acceptability of tattoos.  TV probably has a lot to do with it, with shows like Miami Ink and London Ink being so popular…. and people like Beckham being so heavily inked.  When I got my first tat only ‘dodgy characters’ had them.

 Tattoo

And what would you say to anyone thinking about getting inked?
You only get one life, live it. If you wanna get some ink, and it makes you happy, do it.

I finished there, but frankly I could talk to Steve all day, he has great opinions on what’s right and wrong in the word of tattoos, and he makes every session interesting and enjoyable.
Having said that, the reason I stopped was because this chest tattoo was probably the most painful thing I’ve ever had … looks ace though doesn’t it?

SSS frontman FOXY comments:

"Barney was on a shortlist of one - it was him or no one.  Knew he'd be into the direction of our latest musical outing and the stance the songs take were right up his street.  Some serious barking was required and his dulcet tones didn't disappoint."

ACCESSORY TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM “UNDERBEAT” NEXT MONTH VIA
OUT OF LINE MUSIC

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:download-1.png

German Electro Heroes ACCESSORY are back with brand new album “Underbeat”, out on 13th June via Out Of Line Music.
On “Underbeat” the duo fires up its full arsenal of synthetic sound devices to press forward in twelve versatile tracks clocking in at about an hour of massive playtime. The result is electrifying dance floor culture of the finest variety, sporting thudding EBM onslaughts, lascivious “sexy robot” voices, an effective nod towards German electronic music history, hyper-saturated club grooves, catchy melodies and well-targeted bursts of aggression.
Feel the bass and let yourself go!” – that is ACCESSORY's dance command in a nutshell… “Underbeat” is the perfect vehicle for doing just that.

DANCE OR DIE TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM “UNDERBEAT” NEXT MONTH VIA
OUT OF LINE MUSIC

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:download-2.png

Dark Electro legends DANCE OR DIE return with new album “Nostradamnation”, out on 13th June via Out Of Line Music.

With “Nostradamnation”, Wagner and A.N.G.O. (joined by Chris L. from Agonoize live) manage to combine a dark atmosphere with massive beats, deep vocals with dance floor infernos plus aggression and melody in the unique way that has become their trademark.
And yet again, the group’s sinister, yet very disco-compatible visions of impending apocalypse stands out from the faceless crowd of bland carbon copies that make up the Electro scene. “Nostradamnation” marks the impressive return of a band that, in the Nineties, provided a link between the Gothic- and Electro-scenes like no other and whose unique fusion of styles left its distinct imprint on the club scene. Even now, two decades after the group’s debut, DANCE OR DIE’s sound is fresh, original and unmatched.
Dance the Apocalypse, baby!

British thrashers EVILE have officially revealed that their forthcoming new album will be titled 'FIVE SERPENTS' TEETH'.

EVILE recorded the highly-anticipated new album at Parlour Studios in Kettering, UK, with producer RUSS RUSSELL (NAPALM DEATH, DIMMU BORGIR), who also recorded the band's previous release, 2009's INFECTED NATIONS.

EVILE vocalist and rhythm guitarist MATT DRAKE has recorded a video message for the fans, in which he discusses the new album and the concept behind it.

Watch the video

EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE comments on FIVE SERPENTS' TEETH:

"The other day, Russ sent the final masters for the album over.  It sounded even better than I expected it to.  The past two years of hard work, and the work put in in the studio, have really paid off.  The few people who've heard the album so far have praised it highly, making me, and us, very proud.  The album has such a unique production sound which surprised me; Russ' skills have really shined on this record.  It has an old classic sound, while staying huge and menacing.  Keep an eye out for all things Evile, as 2011 will be a very busy year for us.  See you on A road!"

FIVE SERPENTS' TEETH is due to be released on Earache Records on August 29th.

“Evinta. A project almost 15 years in the making.  An idea that has sat smoldering and never really had a reason to burn alive until now.  Nine albums worth of darkness recreated anew to mark 20 years of MDB.  Music arranged to the soundscapes of sorrows past.  Finally the 20th anniversary allows us to release this music in a form it has been desperately, woefully waiting for.  Enjoy the Darkness.”  - My Dying Bride
Evinta commemorates two decades of doom and gloom from the elite British act, as it embarked upon a special project to re-work familiar melodies and themes from its extensive catalogue into long, flowing symphonic compositions, which includes new vocals and passages from vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe.  These arrangements have been brought to life in co-operation with keyboard maestro Johnny Maudling (of Bal Sagoth fame), as well as a clutch of talented classical musicians and shared vocals courtesy of professional opera singer Lucie Roche.
My Dying Bride has been the leading light of doom metal since the debut album, As the Flower Withers, was released on Peaceville Records back in 1992.  Influenced by acts such as Celtic Frost and Candlemass, the band’s heavy atmospherics have carved a huge worldwide following over the years, as it remains a pinnacle of the genre.
Stay tuned for more info on My Dying Bride and Evinta.

Marnie, you are one busy lady!
Thanks for taking the time out to for an interview!

Which came first the modelling or the performing?
I started off Modelling on the alternative and fetish scene. I would also help putting fashion shows together for the various fetish companies I have worked for.

How long have you been modelling & performing & at what age did u start?
I started modelling when I was just 18. I started putting fashion shows and acts together in my early twenties.
My own solo shows I have been doing for coming up 4 years now!
It has been brilliant!!

Which are your favourite themes when performing?
I like Angsty and slightly creepy themes mixed in with abit of humour at the end. I like snogging the Dark Side hahahaha

Where do you come up with your ideas & where do you get your inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from History, Pop Culture, the absurdity of Life and the Madness of Time, sometimes just the random stuff that floats around in my head.

You design all your own outfits, including your props, that’s pretty impressive!
Do you have a shop based in London where people can purchase your amazing designs?
I work for Libidex and the shop Liberation in Covent Garden stocks our merchandise.
The clothes are not as elaborate as what I wear though hahahaha

You have performed in many various places, where has been your most favourite to date?
No real favourite! It would be comparing apples with pears hahaha. I have been fortunate and have had few if any bad experiences!!!

I try to get to the venue on time so I don't have to stress too much
A little nerves is good, keeps it exciting, too much can make you stumble!
 Marnie Scarlet
Do you have any funny stories regarding your performances, has anything ever gone wrong?
During my Big Bad Ass Balloon act, the Huge 5 foot balloon popped halfway instead of at the end, so I had to Bad Ass it on my own for the second half hahaha got some bookings out of it so can't have been too bad!
Also my music cut once halfway through, again you gotta make that work, even if that means shouting at the DJ!!

You love to use burlesque style and large feathers with the twist of fetish in your shows, have you ever had any professional training?
I have had no professional dance training, but have picked up tips and advice along the way.
I have watched and rehearsed a lot with an awful lot of rehearsing for my dance pieces.
I watch myself back too!
I have done theatre school when I was a kid and even though a while back, that still helps. I did movement classes then too.
 Marnie Scarlet

OL DRAKE, lead guitarist for British thrashers EVILE, has created a number of instructional guitar videos, showing fans how to play some of the band's most well-known tracks.

OL DRAKE comments:
"I get a lot of people asking me to tab out Evile songs, but I don't have the time.  This led me to take a look at the guitar tabs that were up online.  I love that people have taken the time to tab our songs out, but there are mistakes, so I thought why not show people all the little details that are always missed.  I don't want to do too many, as I think it's hugely beneficial to spend the time learning things by ear."

Mortal Kombat
Xbox 360/Ps3

Finish him! Fatality! Flawless Victory!
It's been three whole years since we last heard those immortal words ring out of our television set. The game that's solely responsible for the creation of the ESRB rating system, the now authority on game ratings in the U.S. The game that's been the pinacle of fighters since the first arcade release in 1992, is finally back in your homes. And you guessed it guys, the good old fashioned blood and gore the series is known for is back with it, and bloodier than ever.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:mortal-300x300.jpg

Now a year ago, I would've snubbed this game. I never really enjoyed fighting games, but have recently got into them owing to my current bosses arrogance. If I could beat him ten games in a row at Super street fighter iv, then I'd win any item of stock in store. Now with my shop selling everything from Dvd's to flat screen televisions, I was immediately enticed. My first attempt, I got my butt handed to me. In fact most times I did. I soon began playing at home, practicing every spare minute. I gave up on Street fighter eventually, I still dabble every now and then, but it just wasn’t for me. But I was hooked. I had become a fighter addict, my poison Tekken 6, or more recently Marvel vs Capcom 3. I did give the last released Mk a go, Mortal Kombat vs Dc universe, pitting the residents of Earthrelm and Outworld up against the likes of Batman, Wonderwoman, Superman and Lex Luthor. Now graphically MK vs Dc looked pretty sweet, but it just lacked something. The gameplay was slow, and sluggish. It really did put me off the series.
Then I saw the trailer for the newest edition. First aired in June last year, the cinematic trailer for Mortal Kombat left me speechless. It looked beautiful. Easily one of the most breath taking games I've seen, and the gameplay. Wow, it looked so fluid. So fast. So, so, so good. The legendary Bruce Lee himself once said, 'Don't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water.' It certainly looks like Netherealm studios payed attention to the master's lesson. They went back to basics, back to the old ways that made the series infamous. It's fast, furious and brutal.

So, when this game hit the shelves mid april, I had to have it. I actually managed to play it a few days before release, owing to friends hacked ps3. It confirmed all of my thoughts. It plays so well, i'm actually struggling to find super latives to describe it. The game itslef just sucks you in, you can just about resist the urge to scream at an unknown bystander 'I challenge you to MORTAL KOMBAT!!!'
The game itself offers endless amounts of play time. With a standard arcade mode consisting of ten fights, a colossus story mode that seems like it's never going to end, and a challenge tower consisting of a whopping 300 bouts, and with the welcomed return of the 'Test your' mini games, giving you yet more playtime this game will have you busy for a good few months.

Now as I've already said, graphically this game looks crisp and sharp. It's one of the best looking games we've seen so far this year, and that's saying something with games such as Dragonage 2, and Marvel vs capcom 3 being released earlier this year. It's also one of the most visually appeasing fighters I've played, with the 2d street fighter series looking cartoony, and the Tekken games looking good, but almost too real.Mortal Kombat has really found the sweet spot in the middle ground.

Right to sum up, this game, pretty awesome. Exactly what you'd expect from the grand masters of the mature games category. A good, fast paced fighter, but fun to play aswell. You can't go wrong with a game that allows to cover your hand in flame and punch through someones chest.
I really did enjoy this game, but because of the never ending story mode, I did start to get a wee bit bored. And because of this I'm giving Netherealms lastest outing a 7/10. Now if you don't mind I'm gonna go spit acid in peoples faces and gouge there eyes out. All in the name of defending Earthrealm.
Seeyou next time guys.

Conquer the Decade

Conquer

Judging a band based on one song is like judging a book by its cover – not a wise move. You make a snap decision, put your money and time on the line, and often wind up more disappointed than a polar bear at Iceland.

However, sometimes a song comes along that you just can’t let slip by unannounced. ‘There’s A Snake in My Boot’ by Conquer the Decade is one such track. Digging deep into the genre bank, ‘There’s A Snake in My Boot’ marries speed and finger-throbbing technical ability with gruff vocals to achieve a surprisingly upbeat feel. The infamous track-title-quote from a well-known children’s film, is an amusing twist, opening into the driving breakdown.

As Conquer the Decade themselves say: “we tend to experiment a lot with various different genres and never seem to care what we sound like as long as it’s good.” Nice to hear. In terms of the band then, which formed in 2008 in South Wales, it all seems fairly standard, until the penny drops that most of the members are only 17. It’s enough to make you check their birth certificates.

Whilst it could all just be a honeymoon phase, given the army of listeners Conquer the Decade had won over in this year’s Red Bull Bedroom Jam competition, it might just be worth getting your ears around the rest of their debut EP.

Leather PiG

Leatherpig

Check the list of influences and you’d agree that Leather PiG have no choice but to be awesome. And yet with so many bands failing to live up to the standards that they set themselves, you’d be forgiven for not holding your breath.

From the Metallica-esque opening of ‘Horses Heads in Beds’, Leather PiG more than deliver the whole package, they personally gift wrap it at no extra charge. Whilst this Birmingham based five-piece tag themselves as metal-punk, the hallmarks of the former are certainly far more keenly honed, albeit done at a furious speaker-shattering pace.

Words tumble from vocalist Pete in a high-speed lip-curling snarl, and yet remain distinguishable in their own right, whilst the band behind lead the enthusiastic charge of punishing percussion and sterling solos. Sure they use the same opening tricks more than once, but each song sounds different in its own right.

‘Insexsessions’ sounds like it’s trying to kick start a circle pit in your CD player, but Leather PiG seem equally at home when the melodies drop in, as in the close of ‘Biggles Bites the Dust’. Indeed, Leather PiG’s first EP ‘No Apologies, No Remorse’ sets a dangerous precedent for the band’s follow-up, which is currently being mastered. One thing’s for sure, Leather PiG’s enthusiasm and distinct personality serves to shove the steel back into metal’s backbone.

The albus that shaped today...

Ok. So time for another one of those ‘Album That Shaped Today’ jobs.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:rexgosden:Desktop:The+Sisters+Of+Mercy+-+First+And+Last+And+Always.jpg

My first two were easy, as they were a bit obvious, but today I’m going to talk something a little harder to pin point – First and Last and Always by The Sisters of Mercy.
Now, cynically you could say this was the album that launched a dry ice epidemic and a thousand bad hair dos, but I think it’s influence runs goes a little deeper than that.
F.A.L.A.A. was the soundtrack to the emerging Goth scene, that much is true, but like most scenes Goth wasn’t Goth when it started. It was post-punk, or Indie or, in my area, Alternative Punk. It was arty student types taking a little bit of Joy Division, and little bit of Velvets and quite a lot of pretentious literature, mixing the whole lot together and creating a desolate new vibe.

The Sisters were, in essence, a rock band. At least at first, which is why I think FALAA has dated so well. Floodland had too much of the 80 ‘whooshy’ synth going on so you can tell exactly when it was made … and Vision Thing is Andrew having a mooch through the metal clubs of 90s LA - they’re both great records, it’s just they have the time they were made stamped all over them.
FALAA doesn’t – it could have been made yesterday, or in 1969 (okay!).
Why? Coz it’s just a great rock record, that’s why.
With Eldritch’s vocals oozing and sleazing their way around a solid beat, provided by digital sticksman, Doktor Avalanche … Craig Adams’ flawless, pounding, straight-ahead bass pushing things along …. Marx’s guitar wailing like a wounded banshee … and Wayne Hussey’s unmistakable 12 String ‘flourishes’ adding a little melodic edge, it couldn’t be more perfect.
Have you ever been sat in a dark room, on the wrong end of an amphetamine bing, with paranoia beating away at the front of your brain and all the world at your feet? Well, this is the soundtrack to that moment.
And, while Hussy, Marx and Adams handled most of the music, it was Eldritch’s moaned laments that gave the Sisters their sound. .
Black Planet kicks things off and sets the mood for the next 45 minutes – acid rain, doom and a post-apocalyptic vision borne out chemically induced insomnia.
It’s catchy stuff though! Not in a conventional pop way, but you can’t help putting yourself in that dark room and singing along. Walk Away will get stuck in your brain like barbed fish-hook … and Marianne is the greatest use of baritone I’ve every heard on a rock record.
And, this is where the crux of the Sisters, and this album in particular, influence on modern music.
They made it ok to be a little pretensions, they made it cool to be arty, they made it possible to sing about the darker side of love, life and liberty without joining an extreme metal band.
They gave us Suede, they gave us My Chemical Romance, they gave us NIN, hell, they even gave us Camille!  Drum machine became instruments, rather than the thing you did coz your mate couldn’t afford a drum kit.
And, the use of electronic rhythms is probably where the Sisters had their biggest influence. While all about them were using this modern technology to write catchy pop tunes and smiley dance music, Eldritch and his kooky cohorts used it to make their version of Bowie, The Stooges and the Velvet Underground.
And, all this happened in Leeds! Mental.

Burzum – Fallen

Fallen

Track listings:
1. Fra Verdenstreet
2. Jeg faller
3. Valen
4. Vanvidd
5. Enhver til Sitt
6. Budstikken
7. Til Hel og tilbake igjen

Fallen is the 9th studio album from Burzum, and follows the 2010 release ‘Belus’.

Burzum’s Varg Vikernes says of the new album and his style of music:
"Musically ‘FALLEN’ is like a cross between ‘BELU’S and something new, inspired more by the debut album DET SOM ENGANG VAR than by HVIS LYSET TAR OSS or FILOSOFEM. The sound is more dynamic we mastered the album as if it was classical music and I was more experimental than I was on BELUS in all respects. Lyric wise it is similar to the debut album, in the way that it is more personal and focuses on existential issues, but the mythological undertone known from BELUS is still there. I have also included some ambient tracks a short introduction and a longer conclusion."

I was really looking forward to the release of this album and wasn’t sure what to expect from Varg Vikernes to be honest and it’s definitely not what I expected.

Using his well know croaky voice with some clean singing/talking, growls and screams thrown in, which is quite effective, but the music is abit of a let down, with the same riffs which drone on repetitively in each track.

There is quite a relaxing ambient feel to this album though & I do have mixed views on it, you definitely have to hear the whole album to get the whole impact of what is trying to be achieved here.

The production isn’t that great either but gives the album a more raw edge sound which some black metallers prefer to hear, but sounds pretty good considering it was recorded in just two weeks using some pretty basic equipment.

I have to say the artwork of the album is beautiful using a painting called ‘Élégie’ (English ‘Elegy’ ), by William Adolphe Bouguereau, which is quite more emotional than the previous albums covers.

I don’t think Varg’s work today will ever have the effect Burzum did back in the 90’s but its still an interesting album and one that does tend to grow on you, so definitely deserves a listen!
3/5

Darkest Era - The Last Caress Of Light

Darkest Era

You may have noticed recently that I've not been very nice to Irish folk metal. Perhaps I'm secretly a dirty xenophobe with nothing better to do than slag off the Emerald Isle, you'd certainly be forgiven for thinking so. Darkest Era, however, have come up with this little beauty, a wondrous mix of folk and stoner metal.
The tone is incredibly varied across the album, although all the subject matter takes a firm grip on the mysticism of at least one Pagan religion. Titles like Heathen Dawn and An Ancient Fire Burns brood as their relentless riffs support the strained urgency of the vocals. I said in my Dalriada review that they seemed to be playing folk songs with an added metal element, and Darkest Era seem to be doing something incredibly similar, albeit not covering traditional folk tunes. Poem To Gael, would have you think otherwise with a dutifully melancholic tone as atmospheric as it is melodic.
The vast majority of the album carries on as opener The Morrigan begins; with the subtle folk melodies before dropping to a ravaging sea of overdriven guitars while the powerful vocals pierce through. Compared to Primordial and Cruachan, Darkest Era are streets ahead both in songwriting and melodic capacity, the lament of Beneath The Frozen Sky is almost Gregorian before crashing into a jilted guitar riff, as the drums smash like waves upon a storm-battered cliff.
Darkest Era are epic, in the 'we write eight minutes songs as standard' epic. As the final track begins, laced with contempt and sorrow with the line "What curse is this, that dwells in me?", Darkest Era are aiming high brow in historical fantasy.  The lyrical madness coupled with some harmonised rhythms through the album give The Last Caress Of Light a fantastically maintained sound throughout.
As a final point, Darkest Era have a made a pretty damn good folk/stoner record, a combo that's not often heard. If it was all this standard, it should be.
6.5/10

Scar Symmetry - The Unseen Empire

Scar Symmetry

Say 'progressive death metal' to me and chances are I'll laugh at you before listen to some nice safe music and have a cup of tea. Well, three years ago, perhaps. Then I found Scar Symmetry's Holographic Universe and everything changed, a perfect blend of brutality and melody. It turns out that like me, they think it's a rather winning formula and have decided to keep at it.
Thankfully, the abysmal promo album art is no more, but is replaced with some Orwellian cult nonsense instead. The songs titles reflect the angle too, with a more than slightly cosmic bent to proceedings, see Astronomicon. They range from the grandiose Alpha & Omega to the slightly ridiculous Rise Of The Reptilian Regime, which sounds like every episode of Bucky O'Hare.
Despite touting themselves as a progressive outfit, the majority of tracks follow a distinctly similar patter, at least in terms of vocals. The flesh tearing rasp and growls take up the verses, while the almost boy-band choruses are drenched in reverb.  Illuminoid Dream Sequence shakes it up a little bit by reversing the roles, which is a little disappointing compared to the ingenuity of previous releases. Despite that, the clean vocals really stand out on the beautifully melodic chorus of The Draconian Arrival.
The music is similar split; there are periods of sweeping keys and intricate guitar harmony, the instrumental part on Rise... is especially phenomenal complete with it's harmonised guitar solo before the finale of countered vocals. The issue is that while the music by and large is fantastic, Scar Symmetry too often revert to the safety of death metal breakdown rhythm across their verses and growled vocals which can really cheapen what is otherwise a tornado of excellence.
The Unseen Empire is unforgiving and forces you to really listen; it's by no means driving music. However, it is another triumph by Scar Symmetry in their uniqueness of punishing rhythm and hook laden melodies.
                7.5/10

SuidAkrA - The Book of Dowth

SuidAkrA

It's always puzzled me why it's always the Germans who sing about Scotland. Perhaps the Jocks just don't give a shit and sing about the Aztec traditions, who in turn sing about the fuedal rites of Madagascar. Either way, The Book of Dowth has arrived on our shores and is gearing up to tear you a new one. In a folk kind of way.
As Alex Skolnick once said, "bagpipes are totally metal!". Over Nine Waves crashes into life as a bedrock of guitars pound over the haunting bagpipe melody before Dowth 2059 roars into life in a firey deluge of brutality. Those who liked the stronger elements of folk instruments in Crógacht will feel completely at home with some of the slower and melodic tracks on offer, while those who bathed in the more death style of the older albums will revel in Balor, with it's unrelenting double kick and harmonies that scratch across your spine.
Suprisingly, there are a number of soft moments on what is allegedly a melo-death album (cue cries of selling out from those with single digit IQs). Biróg's Oath takes a female lead, and although it sounds disturbingly familiar to childhood song Oh Dear, What Can The Matter Be? it sits beautifully with it's follow up Mag Mell in creating a melodic interlude, spruced with acoustic guitars and harmonised vocals.
At it's heart, however, The Book of Dowth is punishingly heavy and delivers beyond expectations with Stone Of The Seven Suns. A plucked Celtic intro leads straight into the chorus before building into an angry tempest. SuidAkra seem to have strayed from their death metal roots, but the mid-section harmonies and guitar leads sit sublimely over the thunderstorm of rhythm guitars that never let up through the entire album. Everything, of course, builds to the finale Fury Fomoraigh that starts and just doesn't stop. From the throat-ripping chorus to the terrific breakdown that somehow maintains a folk rhythm, the entire album has built towards a maelstrom of fury as double kick and tremolo picked notes come together. Oh, and those pesky bagpipes turn up again as the finale reprises Upon Nine Waves.
The Book of Dowth is an unforgivingly chaotic record that throws everything SuidAkra has into every track and it emerges as a triumphant symbiosis of back breaking heaviness and melancholic folk melodies. Utterly brilliant.
9/10
