Review

Picture the scene: a Scandinavian mountainous region with many a beautiful tree billowing in the wind. The woods and shrubs swaying in the gentle breeze until you are set upon by an ambient wave that makes the leaves and needles fly across the barren wasteland and you feel a chill going up your spine as a feeling of dread creeps up on you. You turn and wonder where it came from but it has gone and you return to travelling through the undergrowth.

But as you go further, the same feeling is upon you again as the shivers start to tingle you into an uneasiness that is both warm to the touch but makes you wonder if you’ve stumbled into another world. Then, when you think you’re just about safe, something slinks over the ground and you are taken on an audible journey that grabs onto you and throws you into a raging maelstrom.

You’re on a ship and the tides are of indigenous drums and flutes and hits you with all the force that’ll make you feel lost and drowning in a pool of notes. Once you feel you’ve been drowned, you’re back on earth, alone and empty and soothed nicely and you realise you’ve been under the spell of one of the finest composers from Sweden as of late.

Yes, this album had me in such a trance I could only describe it as some thrilling adventure. For anyone curious about what Wardruna would be like if they collaborated with Mike Oldfield in his Ommadawn days, you’d have Draugurinn and its latest offering: ISAVETUR.

What can I say, this album is purely magical. If you like your dark ambience and folk music played on instruments only people from the band’s homeland will know of, then this really is that album you must pick up. What a sensation it was to feel like I’d been taken to such a beautiful land and then literally drowned in sound and brought back to life feeling like Lemuel Gulliver returning from his travels.

An excellent piece of music from an amazing woman. Disa, the woman behind this project, really is the person to go to if you want a thrilling adventure and a moment to calm the nerves and picture a world so lush and beautiful at the same time. All great feelings of nature and melancholy and even happiness is present on this release, so if you want something that will be there for you in all moments of sadness, delight and curiosity, this is the album you need.

Thank you Draugurinn, it was a real pleasure adventuring into the unknown with you.
