Norwegian, Andy LaPlegua, is known for controversial lyrics and anthems that most EBM fans will recognise. Therefore it may come as a bit of a surprise for long time followers when hearing the change of sound on the band´s 6th release. The release is a soundtrack for the computer game “DmC Devil May Cry” and even through it is still the sound of Combichrist there is a significant new take on genres.

The band definitely know how to make music that makes you want to slay demons and the creators of the game have chosen the right soundscape for sure. “No Redemption” is making the band sound a lot more industrial and certainly a lot more hardcore with little hints and flirtation with metalcore such as clichéd breakdowns.

There is not a lot of hip-shaking dancefloor tunes on this album and variation on the guitar-influenced record would have been much appreciated. It is maybe the intention, but “No Redemption” tends to be just some background music that has a nerve, but doesn’t really stick to the brain.

The music is still soaked in keyboard but more in the likes of bands such as Bleeding Through and not so much the EBM genre. Even so, “No Redemption” is one of Combichrist’s most effective and riveting releases, but it is lacking the catchy songs that have shaped Combichrist throughout the years and one might fear that Combichrist is taken a direction where several bands already have gone.
