On a Friday night in London, with the pouring rain and I’m making my way to the classy Shepherds Bush Empire in west London.
The soaking wet fans are patiently waiting for the doors to open and are looking great dressed in full Burlesque/Goth outfits in the cold. We are about to get immersed into the world of The Asylum created by tonight’s host Emile Autumn. The American beauty‘s “Victoriandustrial” genre is more akin to a Broadway musical than a standard rock performance.
Emilie Autumn’s devilishly dark lyrics, metal-shredding violin solos, and industrial-strength voice reinvent “gothic” for the masses. Her shows are renowned for a sexy circus of glam rock burlesque vibe, backed by a scantily-clad girl band known to EA’s devoted fans as the “Bloody Crumpets” including Veronica Varlow and Captain Maggots.
There is no support acts and the show promptly starts at 8pm.
The intro of the show involves many false alarms as to when the performers are about to enter the stage, which has a very large cage representing the Asylum Gates with a clock at the top set to 4oclock.
Chamber and 1920s ditties are played when suddenly The Bloody Crumpets appears one after the other wearing Burlesque/Fantasy outfits.
Emilie comes out of the gates wearing her pink corset, stockings and a large Mohican hair piece.
She opens the set with an energetic rendition of her album’s title single “Fight Like A Girl”. After quite an energetic kick-off, the atmosphere turns eerie in the blink of an eye with ‘4 o’Clock Reprise’ and ‘What Will I Remember?’ where Emilie is stripped of her glamorous outfit by her two accomplices and sings from a staged psych ward.
After this little warm up Naughty Veronica plays her famous rat game, picking a girl from the ecstatic audience for a kiss.
After a short intermission, we get a little more up with one of the most happy songs of their set “Girls, Girls, Girls”, before taking a peek into Emilie’s nightmares with “Scavenger”, where a huge rat-like creature appears on stage.
