Once again I am stood outside this stunning and beautiful Victorian venue in Manchester, on an extremely cold and chilly night. With fans eager to get into the venue, holding on tightly to the ticket in their hand… not only to warm up but awaiting to see the the amazing Mindless Self Indulgence.
Starting off the night is the band The Dead Betas, who originate from Devon , Uk and one of the things I love about attending concerts is hearing new bands – and opening up my musical interests.
I have not been introduced to The dead Betas before tonight , but am very grateful to have seen them live this evening , plus talk to them in person , through out the night . They Consist of 4 members , Tobias Monsters , Aidan Sugarboi , Martron and Kazraine Maars and are “Messy Electro-Punk” plus add a huge Blast of Arcadecore/Beefed up synth punk with rawness – if that genre even exists!
They had great stage presence , almost like a school punk band that have been hired to play at a prom or school disco . Looking like they have just finished class and jumped on stage with there shabby sharp image, all adoring white shirts and wearing ties in a rebel manger combined with VERY skinny jeans. The crowd where very happy with the energetic music , and performance it was very well received by every one.
Getting the audience to join in singing with Aidan , on the cover songs they did – He Is a very talented singer , constantly bouncing around the stage with endless enthusiasm .
The other band members work very well – it is strange hearing a synth mixed with trad punk – but it makes it come alive , and brings a whole new sensation on the ears – I wish the lads well , as they will go far with the unique sound and stage presence.
These guys made a great impact on opening the show!

Next up were The Red Paintings; The story behind the creation of The Red Paintings is stunning – yet near tragic one, yet it also explains the strange yet mesmerizing band.
After suffering a near-fatal seizure, visionary performer Trash McSweeney has set out to share with the world all the ideas about what he has seen and felt by taking to his guitar, piano and notebook and The Red Paintings were officially born.
The Red Paintings are a five-piece group , consisting of guitar, bass, drums, cello & violin who incorporate additional orchestral, choral and performance art features wherever possible. They wear extremely decorative , stunning and elaborate theatrical costumes on stage , in the style of early Japanese traditional dress.
The live show features visual content which includes unique projections along with human body and canvas painters who join the band on stage collaborating in real time to create artworks that reflect the band’s music and energy.
Artists are sourced with the aim of finding struggling but talented painters and providing them with a new platform to showcase their work. The band has received rave reviews for their unique sound and performances on stage.
They are not a band in my eyes – but a show that combines sound and visuals to create the feeling of togetherness .
A living canvas that stimulates the senses and minds of the audience…a true and unique art experience.
The Red Paintings’ sound evokes everything from child-like lullabies , to alternative-rock numbers. The band have an elegance about them, and I would compare there sound to similar bands that are multi-faceted acts like Radiohead, Muse, and The Arcade Fire, and their appeal reaches baroque-pop steam-punks, metal-heads, indie-rock fanatics.
I think a lot of people that night didn’t not know how to take this band to be honest – many where memorised by how different they are, others did think they where very strange and not to many peoples tastes – but you can not please very one.
Mindless Self Indulgence – You wouldn’t believe that this band was formed in 1997! Yes it really does make you feel old when you think about it . With the combined talents of the band members Jimmy Urine – vocals, synthesizer, programming , Steve, Righ? – guitar, backing vocals , Kitty – drums Lyn-Z – bass guitar , This is MINDLESS SELF INDULGANCE ….. or MSI known for short.
The devoted fans come out in force and all weathers ( Believe me , it is bloody freezing in the city of Manchester in December ) to see and support their favourite band .
What I love about Mindless Self indulgence is that you do not just go to see this band perform you are apart of the action . The audience participation is constant through the entire show. From jumping into the crows , where the fans scream with excitement in seeing an idol so close his jokes , uber camp persona on stage and hints to what song will be played next , buy talking to the crowd , interacting with them , it really does make you apart of the theatrics.
The crude , over sexual content is just what you would expect form the band , well if you are shocked why would you attended really!
With tasty track titles such as Fuck Machine, Pay for It , Pussy All Night , Dickface , Masturbates and
Hey Tomorrow Fuck You and Your Friend Yesterday , you can pretty much say , the band are not for people with a nervous disposition or mard…
After huge cheers form the crowd they started with witness, with all eyes on Jimmy , and his very smart John Travolta ‘Saturday night fever ‘, white suit. Plus you can not talk about MSI without mentioning the very sexy Lyn -Z you can say that the start was what every one was wanting for.
After only a few seconds intro into the second song , the audience erupted into a crazed mass mosh pit , as it was one of the most famous known songs of the band ‘SHUT ME UP’ . With everyone so ecstatic with hearing one of their favourite song, the crowd where celebrating with beer being thrown , people crowd surfing , going crazy , the people at the back making some very impressive dance moves that would make any one jealous . The band where jumping all over the stage , the amount of energy and adrenalin pumping in that room could have lit an entire city.
They played a huge selection of tracks from the five albums they have out – the songs that most uproar and the crowds wild where ‘1989’ , ‘bitches ‘and ‘never wanted to dance’ where certainly the most proud crowd pleasers this evening.
I loved that the members of the band where all throwing things like picks , water bottles , even dousing them in water at a few points during the evening into the crowd, I think Jimmy spend more time on the speakers and jumping into the crowd than on the stage . The atmosphere was a combination of hilarious with the antics , energetic and real throws you back in time when you first heard the band all them years ago …. oh the nostalgia!
The crowd where fantastic , so lively and hungry for action on stage . I loved that there was a huge mix of older fans , who where listening to the band when they first appeared on the scene, blended with a very young 14 + to 16.I was curious how such young fan’s have heard about MSI, and decided to ask a few of them to kill my curiosity.
Its a blend of them going to alternative night clubs for there age , parents or older siblings that are MSI fans who have listened and know about the band . And some said they decided to listen to MSI after the marriage between Lyn-Z and My Chemical Romance front man Gerard Way, as of September 3rd, 2007.
If you have not yet seen this band live or only know a few songs , even if you only know one, you will not be disappointed.
