WAT THAM TA PAN IN PHANG NGA TOWN, THAILAND

WAT THAM TA PAN IN PHANG NGA TOWN, THAILAND Aka HEAVEN & HELL CAVE AND TEMPLE

Words & Photography by Sabrina Dersel

As one of the Independent Voice writers, I recently decided to go travelling and as I have written blogs and articles on my previous visits, I thought Thailand should be no different. So please feel free to read my adventures!
(22)
During a summer stay in Southern Thailand, I came across an article about the Wat Tham Ta Pan, a buddhist heaven and hell representation. Of course I got very curious to check it out so I took my scooter and did the 2 hours ride in the morning from Phuket.

1
There was no sign to get there, except some locals saying to “Turn left at the traffic lights” when I asked around, which was easy considering there is only one traffic light in this town!

2
As I’m writing this I realise I didn’t actually go to the Heaven cave, but headed straight to the Hell one. Ooops! I m sure you don’t mind!

Buddhist Hell (Naraka in Sanskrit, Na Rok in Thai) awaits you, if you do not follow the five precepts of Buddhism during your life:

Abstain from taking life (thou shall not kill).
Abstain from taking what is not given (thou shall not steal).
Abstain from sexual misconduct (thou shall not commit adultery).
Abstain from false speech (thou shall not lie).
Abstain from fermented drink that causes headlessness (drunkeness).

I am pretty sure 99% of you will see me there then! 馃槈

Many Buddhists believe that after you die, you will be hauled in to see Phya Yom, the Death King. His stern assistants scrutinize your dossier to see how many good and bad deeds have been recorded.

5
Then the Death King decides where to send you. If you are unlucky (or lucky, depending what you are into), you will be sent directly to Hell, Do not pass Go, Do not collect 拢200!

6
Enter through the dragon’s mouth and walk about 50 meters through the dragon, descending all the time.

7
All around you are many statues showing the terrible fates that will be used to help people eradicate their evilness!

8
Be Scared my dear little worms, BE SCARED!

9
I could describe what the scenes are about, but no more words needed! Enjoy the photos and see you there for some drinks…hmm, sorry I meant soya milk! 馃槈
