This is the first full length release from multicultural five piece Empty Yard Experiment. The Dubai basd band have been making a name for themselves over the last year or so with support slots for the likes of Evenescence, Anathema and Metallica.
‘Kallisti’ stradles the worlds of post and progressive rock in epic fashion. Large parts of the album are instrumental, making use of spoken word and electronic interludes. This builds on an atmosphere that embodies the bands Middle Eastern soul. Songs like ‘The Blue Eyes of a Dog’ and ‘There Will Never Be’ are testement to this.
EYE aren’t afraid to disrupt the balance of these atmospheric anthems. Throughout the album there are tracks that break the tempo with driving guitar riffs and vocals akin to that of Alice and Chains. The prime example of this being ‘Entropy’. This is a killer tune and to me, this is EYE at their very best. While I did enjoy their more post rock side, it’s their heavier more progressive side that impresses me the most. ‘Greenflash’ and ‘God has His Reasons’ are other examples of this.
All in all this is a great debut album that fans of Tool, Porcupine Tree and Mogwai will find interesting.
I can’t help but wonder, if these guys come from the west, they may have been making waves by now. However,
after some high profile support slots, this debut and a Uk tour this December, I don’t think the waves will
be too far away for Emty Yard Experiment.
