 Review

Atmospheric black metal is becoming more and more diverse and popular by the day. The canon of it is widening as we speak, and France has its fair share, being a country with one thriving black metal scene. And the latest band to come about from said scene is Cepheide and their debut EP: DE SILENCE ET DE SUIE.

This band certainly know what they’re doing because the first track ‘A la Croisee des Ames’, has droning tremolos and a wall of sound that will make anyone who likes dark ambient and shoegaze happy. But the vocals are indecipherable and the melodies become a little predictable after a while. This is bog standard atmospheric black metal.

‘La ou les Idoles demeurent’ and ‘L’Homme Ruine’ are both impressive by having less blast beats, but I couldn’t find much about it that stood out for me. It might have been the low fidelity of the release, but there were no lyrics or changes in direction and melody that made me want to play this album again.

‘Deluge’ rounds the release off by telling me that this release isn’t amazing but showcases the band’s musicianship well. Cepheide know what they’re doing but I think we’ll only know if they’ve got the potential to stick around once they’ve released a few more pieces.
