So Hideous are a four-piece Post-Metal band from Brooklyn, NY who have just unleashed their second full-length release ‘Laurestine’ after eighteen months since their first.
Laurestine is a vastly interesting and beautiful album, combining the melancholic screams of traditional atmospheric black metal and the textured guitars and drumming of post-rock with a intensely epic 30-piece orchestra, known as The First Light Orchestra. For this album the mix of styles is very elegantly done, each instrument section complementing the others in this greatly theatrical performance. This is one of those albums which requires multiple listens to fully appreciate the whole thing. Though from the beginning, its haunting atmosphere drags you in instantly.
It kicks off with YesterYear: a seven minute track which represents the seven minutes it takes for one to reflect on life and prepare themselves for the afterlife. The whole album seems to follow this concept and does it very well. The sinister beauty of ‘Hereafter’ really harnesses the First Light Orchestra to their potential, an emotional and dramatic piece. The album finishes off with ‘A Faint Whisper’ which feels like the last breath you take as the beautiful melodies of the strings and lamenting vocals draw this epic opus to a close.
Don’t let the name put you off, their music is definitely quite the opposite! I’d recommend this band and this album to any film soundtrack fanatics and those who are into post-metal and atmos-black that want to have a taste of something very unique.
