Serotonin Syndrome are a fairly new band from northern Finland with a small following. As you might be able to tell from the bleak artwork, SS are definitely influenced by their surroundings, and proud to be influenced by their homeland contemporaries, Katatonia.
But there’s much more to this five piece than that. They are on their second album already, and this five tracker is progressive and brooding effort. Opening with ‘Twelve Step Circle’, the depressive mood is established from the outset, before a post-metal chug comes in along with a strong, inhuman vocal style which goes on to almost guide and direct this album. It’s surprising to find that Serotonin Syndrome is vocalist Asko’s only active metal band, as he sounds much more experienced, and gives the band’s sound a sense of completion which is certainly lacking on instrumental closer ‘Sarajas’.
This isn’t to say that the other four instrumentalists don’t do their bit. Layered guitars build to create impressive melodies, whilst the rhythm section carry this album’s strong and moving pace. Despite repeatedly clean intros, this album manages to come off as fast flowing and exciting.
It’s a dynamic effort then, but it could do with a little more bite, perhaps some more impact choruses or soul-grabbing riffs. The X-factor isn’t here on this album. However, these five songs are dependable, and if you’re in the right melancholic mood, can really hit the spot. For this reason, this one’s a keeper.
