Rotten UK is a retro punk four piece from Rochester New York made up of a bunch of guys who love British punk and have a macabre interest in the darker side of 80s pop culture.

Although clearly a punk act, taking inspiration from both the Oi! and deathrock movements, this record is out the heavy metal label Hell’s Headbangers. To me this more than makes sense however, as moments such as the opening riff to ‘Stagnation is Sin’ and the chanting chorus to ‘Reaper Follows’ both reek of NWOBHM.

If the track title ‘Stagnation is Sin’ gives you hope of an exciting and fresh record from a band full of ideas- abandon your expectations now. This is certainly one of the most uninspired albums I have ever heard. The guitar riffs are boring and shoddy, never stepping outside of the narrow parameters of what’s been done before by hundreds of bands, and the lyrics are so painfully blunt and obvious that it’s an embarrassment to decipher them.

To top things off, this band have jumped on the bandwagon of adopting pessimistic cold war overtones that results in a very, very bad version of 2013’s buzz-band, Beastmilk.

Does this record have anything to offer at all? Well, yes, it can be quite fun at times. Although when listened to all the way through this albums gets boring very quickly, in short bursts the novelty is strong enough and drummer ‘Joel Division’ provides enough energy to get your moving. People who spent their teenage years listening to Christian Death, Samhain and Cortex might find some nostalgia in the bleak atmosphere that’s created by the lo-fi production and heavy use of reverb and echo.

This is very much a short term effect however, and I’ll be surprised if this record makes a late entrance into anybody’s albums of the year lists. Quite simply, this record is strikingly dull and one-faced.
