Review:

As a metalhead, picture the scene: you’ve had a terrible day doing whatever it is you do and on your journey home (or upon your arrival at home), you can do one thing to vent your frustrations and soothe your frayed nerves. What can help? There’s far worse things to consume than a to-the-point slab of metal that basically grabs you by the scruff of the neck, pulls you nose-to-nose, eyeballs you and then bellows in your face for half-an-hour. TRAGIC CAUSE, if you please…

Let’s get the biggest issue out of the way first-hand – this won’t win points for originality. It is a simple album at heart, with thrash riffs stacked upon pulverizing drums and Herr Hoffman’s throaty bark played with fraught vivacity. If you’re familiar with thrash, you’ll know what you’re in for. Additionally, the tempo rarely wavers – it’s a mid-tempo affair, with frequent use of double-time drums from Herr Hauser. Where sometimes tracks will pass by unnoticed, it’s these little inflections and tweaks that bring the listener back.

Despite this, the mere aggression on display comes as no surprise to a thrasher, nor to those craving a remedy to the ails of their day. It’s rare to find something where simple teeth-baring aggression will suffice, but “No Restraint” manages it. Whether it’s the immediacy of the album’s title track, or the violence and menace of “Force My Hand”, it’s a everything one would hope for in a pit beatdown. Whilst it will no doubt serve the aforementioned purpose of letting out the day’s grievances, you do feel that this will be best heard reverberating off the walls in a sweat and booze-soaked club with a roaring mosh pit.

TRAGIC CAUSE’s third album “No Restraint” is every bit its name – a no holds barred blast of thrash that continues the band’s legacy of hostility. There are no prizes for originality here, nor for variety of tempo, but it still offers a compelling listen and welcome aural blast at the end of a painful day.
