Ghost stopped off in Manchester as part of The Popestar 2017 tour to conduct a spectacular ‘ritual’. The Swedish metal band are known for putting on an incredible show every night and their cult like fan base are as passionate as they come. However, I’m sure this show left a lot of fans with their jaws on the floor. As soon as the doors opened the crowd began pouring into the magnificent O2 Apollo Manchester. With the incense burning on stage and the cult like choir music playing before the show, you definitely know that it’s not your everyday metal gig.
The lights dropped and the nameless ghouls made their way onto the stage. They kicked off the night with one of their newest songs, Square Hammer. As the menacing ghouls got the first song going, Papa Emeritus III emerged from the darkness at the back of the stage in all his finery. As the spotlight found the one of a kind front man, the fanatical crowd began banging their heads and singing along to the immense sounds.
I have never seen a band like Ghost before! The nameless ghouls have an infectious energy and a menacing look about them in their identical masks and outfits. Papa is the obvious leader of this cult like band as he leads the ‘ritual’ in his dark, satanic like gown and face paint.
The band continued in this style throughout the night with a mix of heavy and epic tracks from their three albums such as From The Pinnacle To The Pit and Year Zero. The musical talent and entertainment value you get from this band is like no other and if you are lucky enough to have seen them live then you will know what I’m talking about. You can find a number of my images from the night below along with the set list.
