Review:

The Wizards is a 70s hard rock and occult band from the Basque country. Formed around four years ago, this is their second full length album. Once anything involves star signs it sorta gets my back up a bit, especially as these guys seem serious about it.
They do make a big point of stating how much they drink and take drugs. This gives them a proper rock’n’roll status, I suppose, but seems a little forced. Only one way to found out – fellas, if you’re ever in town, let’s go for a beer and see what happens.

In the interest of fairness, I doubt anyone would dislike this album. It’s very well played, great groove to it, cool solos, differing tempos and styles. It’s a lot of fun. There’s a definite rockabilly feel to some of the tracks, like “Calliope”, for instance. But it’s also packed full of clichés. He has a mildly annoying voice and they use lyrics like “writings on the wall”. There’s just no need. The best way I can describe them is that they sound like the cool band at school you really wanted to be part of.

I dunno, I’m doing it down a bit. It’s good music, it’s just not gonna change your life. If you like any of the bands they mention as formative – Black Sabbath, Danzig, The Cult, Blue Oyster Cult, Pentagram, Deep Purple – you’ll find something enjoyable here. They also sound like there would be banging live, so if you see them at a festival anywhere, I recommend you take time out to catch them.
