Review:

This is  Empusae’s 17th release and features the guest vocals of Colin H. Van Eeckhout on both very long tracks. The two songs on this album are both over twenty minutes long and are the result of the slow process of Nicolas van Meirhaeghe losing his vision. He got diagnosed about 3 years ago with a rare genetic disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa. There is no cure for this disease and in some cases, blindness occurs within a few years, sometimes within a few decades, sometimes it stagnates at a certain stage.

The songs are as noted, very long and have a lot of effects and sound mixed into them, kind of crying out for headphones to listen with. This is definitely a drone album with a very down and atmospheric quality to the songs. This is far from an upbeat album, it kind of drags you down, but not into depression, just down into the damp morass of a jungle with the heat and humidity almost overpowering you, pushing you down and down further until you can almost bear it no longer, but yet you still can’t keep away. It also has the feel of a prog album with all the sounds thrown into the mix, kind of like a dirge-like Pink Floyd.

This is not my cup of tea, but I did find it strangely compelling and will be playing this at night while relaxing in bed. I suggest that you put on your headphones, find a quiet place and let this wash over you, letting yourself go and disappearing into another world.
