Review

I have waited and waited for this day to come and it finally has! If you are a fan of Reneé Phoenix’s other projects such as ‘Fit For Rivals’or ‘The Explicits’, you need this album.

The best thing about that is it’s available to pre-order now on her website for a physical copy or on Itunes. No need to fret as it will come out in other forms too. I have been a fan of ‘Fit For Rivals’ since around 2010 and have followed them and Phoenix on her journey since. That even meant going back and listening to her old band ‘The Explicits’.

One of the best things about this album is the fact that you can hear all of the influences that Phoenix has incorporated into the album. Be it other bands or life experiences that have got her to where she is now. I’m just completely blown away.If you want a little taste of the album, right now GODLESS and FOLLOW THE LEADER are on the Fit For Rivals YouTube channel and are doing really well.
That being said let me outline the songs a little bit for you:

SWALLOW – God damn I love this song. This is by far my favourite song on the album for a whole lot of reasons. It’s catchy for starters. It’s full of grit. It has an absolutely wild track behind the lyrics that give it that extra push. This is one of the heavier tracks on the album and Phoenix has stated herself this is probably her favourite.

GODLESS – This one is already out there for you to experience yourself on YouTube, but despite its rock influences, it is a bit different with its heavy punk bassline making it more of a nu-rock type sound, rather than nu-metal. The chorus is sure to get stuck in your head with this one.

YOU THINK YOU KNOW – This one is reminiscent of something you would find in the credits of a movie – probably superhero or horror based one due to its eerie beginning and harsher chorus. The break for the first solo in this song is short and sweet but hits the right note. Just when you think it’s over it keeps on giving.

FOLLOW THE LEADER – The only other song available to listen to right now, this one starts a little differently from the others. It builds itself up throughout the verse to a totally kickass chorus with an awesome track. This song really showcases all of Phoenix’s talent with her voice and instruments.

DESPERATE – The final track on the album ties it all up in a neat little bow. This song is probably the most relatable to people lyrically. Going into a situation that most everyone will experience in their lifetime this is a good tune to let out all that anger towards it.

All in all, I fell in love with this EP from the moment it started right until the end. This EP fully showcases the breadth of Phoenix’s talent and then some. Don’t forget she wrote, performed, produced and released this entire album herself. Although different from her work with ‘The Explicits’ and ‘Fit For Rivals’ you can hear the influences from both bands. She has taken this away and worked on it to make it her own. As well as the music she’s listened to and even life influences to fuel the writing.

It’s not often that I recommend an album for everyone in the alternative scene to listen to because not much can appeal to everyone, but with this album, however, I feel there is at least one song everyone can enjoy. It comes with my highest recommendation. Seriously. I cannot recommend it enough.
