It is nice to see when classic voices from the 80s return. Kim Wilde is back with her first UK release since 1992 and it is different for sure. Written and produced by both herself and her brother Ricky Wilde, each song is something different from the next and that’s a big plus for the album, as you’re able to experience the full breadth of Wilde’s talent. I’m going to walk you through each track as it is a little easier to give you a vibe of each song rather than critique the album as a whole.
So here we go:
Here Come the Aliens – For me personally this is one of the best songs on the album which is good, as it’s obviously what introduces you and it catches your attention from the get-go. I think the reason this is one of the better ones is because of the rock influence. It’s definitely got that 80’s influence sound to it with the synths accompanying it, but the riffs of the guitar and upbeat drumming is what I love best about this track.
Pop Don’t Stop – This one is a little odd to me. Again 80s synth seems to be a theme, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but as the title suggests there are definitely high pop elements to this song, but it is also reminiscent of ‘hands up rave music’ in its techno elements. Something this reminds me of is a little bit Disney in its Camp Rock era.
Kandy Krush – I love the bassline for this song. No mistaking its rock influences here, and this seems to be what suits Wilde’s voice the most and there is obvious improvement and growth over the years, and this is one of those songs that demonstrates that. Its vibe is a little ‘action movie car chase’ which is something I imagine this being used in.
Stereo Shot – Again she has not gone wrong with a good bassline in any of these songs yet, and I really love that. This song specifically reminds me quite a bit of Blondie but this really works for her.
Yours Til’ The End – A little more stripped back at the beginning of this song from the others on the album but that actually helps keep it a little more interesting. I can hear a little Duran Duran on this song but again Wilde’s use of interesting guitar and bass absolutely kills it in this song.
Solstice – Synth, and lots of it to start. I like that it stops and drops into classic piano and the fact that this song is so stripped back actually makes it one of the best on the album. Lyrically this is one of the best on the album and this is the song where her 80s influences are most noticeable.
Addicted To You – Well this one I imagine would be played in nightclubs for raves right from the get-go. Again, different from most of the songs on the album musically. A lot of synths, techno and a hint of rock influence. I found this song really entertaining and it was one of the ones I tapped along to. It’s quite catchy and infectious.
Birthday – Hooray for the electric guitar! This song had a lot of oomph in it and definitely packed a punch. Very, very 80s with its synth added in. It has a sort of Guns ‘n’ Roses meets well Kim Wilde vibe and it’s an interesting mix.
Cyber Nation War – Very, and I mean VERY action ‘movie-esque’. I imagine this being used in video-games as well. This song has a lot of character in it and again it is so different from everything else. The use of choir in this song is absolutely chilling and I love it.
A Different Story – Instantly reminiscent of Muse and their song Uprising. Something about the bassline and the intermittent guitar really gives me that vibe. It’s not like that the whole way through mind you, and it’s not a bad thing either. A lot of what Wilde is doing, and putting twists on really works and this is another one of those cases.
Rock The Paradiso – 80s chick flick is the definite vibe for this song. I can’t really describe it any differently than that but it’s a good throwback to that style and is a fun song to listen to.
Rosetta – Last but certainly not least, the last song on this album is much slower from the other songs on this album. It’s very Kylie Minogue/Madonna in terms of what she’s doing with her voice in this song, but it’s a nice change of pace to end the album on.
Overall this song has one main element of the 80s, and it’s not a bad thing. Kim Wilde is putting a fresh spin on something old to make it new and exciting again, and it has worked. For 80s enthusiasts, this is going to be a go-to album for sure but I can also see it resonating with teenagers of this generation too. The album has so many different elements in it from pop, rock to synth and dance. There is going to be at least one or two songs on this album that you’ll enjoy. Both Kim and her brother Ricky have made a great team together on this album and should be happy with the outcome.
