Morgengrau has been going some eight years, and hails from Texas despite the German name (which means gray morning, I think?) This is the second album from the group. Interestingly, the artwork for the album cover was done by a chap named Nick Keller, who has done concept paintings for various films, like LOTR and Mad Max. Jolly good it is too.

I’d not heard them before, but musically there’s a lot to get your teeth into. Stylistically it’s firmly in the ‘death’ camp, with a pensive approach to the subject. I have to say I enjoy every track on the album, but special praise has to go to Wolves of Thirteen; a powerful deluge of double pedalling with some broody chanting over the top. This gives it a kind of occulty sort of quality. They claim to be influenced by bands like Deicide, which I think you can hear in there.

The only criticism I have is that it is sometimes a little similar in tempo and texture throughout. It’s not massively varied, so by the end I was wanting something a little different. All in all, a solid effort and definitely a band to watch.
