Review

Sweden’s oddly named Wombbath have returned with their third studio outing: “The Great Desolation”; their first in 3 years. And I definitely tells that these Scandinavian bards of darkness and depravity won’t be mellowing anytime soon.

This is an album best described as being like a roaring fire of noise. The blast beats reap havoc and chaos over your ear drums and the riffs cut right to the bone when the album gets to its harshest. It’s a ferocious release all round and it gave me hope that the Swedish scene hasn’t had its day, which I was a little concerned over in recent years.

There are the odd moments of melody and a flowing buzz only extreme metal musicianship can do when it cuts from a battle cry of anger to a flowing river of strings. Each track on this is a tune, apart from the penultimate: ‘Hail the Obscene’ which starts out odd. But that for me was all the beef I had for this album.

A piece worth owning if you like Entombed or Hyperion styles of European Death Metal.
