Review:

Irreversible Mechanism have brought out their second full length album and the Belarusian progressive death metallers have taken off from where they left off from 2015’s debut ‘Infinite Fields’. There’s been members added to the band since it is no longer the dynamic duo of Vladislav Nekrash (should probably get that checked out) and Yaroslav Korotkin. The drums were actually done remotely in Australia by no other than Ne Obliviscaris drummer Dan Presland so you can tell that the band are making strides in the right direction.

Belarusian death metal has been something of a juggernaut in recent times, especially with bands like Veld and Eximperituserqethhzebibšiptugakkathšulweliarzaxułum becoming household names, no matter how simple or impossible to pronounce, in the world of extreme metal. Irreversible Mechanism are something different entirely from their national contemporaries and are far more leaning on the more progressive and melodic end of the spectrum, but they are technical and can really formulate some tight and densely decorated music.

The opening of the album is a two parter, in ‘Existence I and II’ split between two tracks we get a flurry of Irreversible Mechanism’s abilities from the atmospheric to the sharp and cutting. I prefer their more atmospheric tendencies than the bitty and choppy rhythm that is prevalent throughout the album as I see that this is where the band really know where and how to construct. They have all the technical ability required, and there are plenty of examples where some multi-dimensional fills come into the makeup of the flux that continues the constant shift.

In terms of standout tracks, I’d have to say that ‘Footprints In The Sand’ steals the album with such a grand atmosphere that builds from some very textured melody, into a titan of a prog-metal anthem. It’s also the longest on the album, so good for Irreversible Mechanism for putting all the effort into where it counts. ‘Abolution’ is also another one that ticks the right boxes and the rest all have their charm, but the album as a whole doesn’t stun me and I find my interest wanes.
Overall, we have another example of a very technical group of musicians who have put far too much effort in the technical aspects, and although they have some successes, unfortunately the band lose a bit of the impact of the music in the process. The production is fantastic but the music is a bit lacking, even with the efforts of Dan Presland who failed to wow me on this number. Is it worth a listen? Definitely, but it may not be something that thrills you for years to come.
