Fresh off the back of being invited to play the first ever session for Jack Saunders’ new BBC Radio 1 show, Stereo Honey today announce the ‘What Makes A Man’ EP, due for release on 16th November by LAB Records.
The announcement is accompanied by the band’s new single ‘Icarus’, a soaring, sophisticated statement from the London four piece, fully justifying the hype that has been building around the band in recent months.
Thematically the track is frontman Pete’s reimagining of the Icarus myth, from the point of view of his own relationship with his father, inspired by Christine Hemps’ poem of the same name. The track forms part of a body of work examining society’s toxic construct and preconceptions of masculinity, as Pete elaborates
“I don’t want to be a man anymore. I’m tired of being the strong and silent type. I can’t even breathe. Sometimes I don’t know who I am. I’m just floating in the gutter and screaming through my teeth. I’m trying to stand up straight but I’m crumbling underneath. What makes a man? This question’s always bothered me. Don’t fucking cry it’s embarrassing, an older boy once said to me. Strength lies in silence and shame in vulnerability. Intimacy and tenderness give way to anger and aggression, the only acceptable forms of expression. I don’t want to be a man anymore. Not that kind of man. I don’t think any man should. It’s a standard that’s impossible to live up to, and it’s killing us“
Listen to new single “Icarus”:
Having amassed a hugely impressive 20 New Music Friday playlists on Spotify across their last 3 releases, a Radio 1 playlist spot, 22 festival appearances across the summer including the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading & Leeds and queues around the block for all 3 of their shows at The Great Escape, Stereo Honey are fast becoming one of the most exciting bands around at the moment.
