When you’ve heard all kinds of black and death metal sub-genres and enjoy both the melodic and the rawest of the two great genres, it is more than heartwarming to discover a band who fuse both those extremes together to give you a breath of putrid air in a world heavily festering with evil delights.

Soulphernus are a band who do just that with their self-titled debut. Hailing from the north of England, I felt this was a band who have researched and studied the wide echelons of UK black and death metal to the last iota, and have fused together the best of the best to bring an album that will prick the ears of the melodic and raw fans of both genres.

I was heavily reminded of Belphegor when I turned this album on and later on, I could hear some riffs and drum notations that sounded a little similar to early At The Gates albums.

In their press release, the guys said they were good for fans of Aeon, and I could definitely hear the Swedish sound ringing through every track, be it a slightly slower tempo like ‘Soul Furnace’ or a fast gallop like ‘In Thy Name (We Gather)’.

There’s potential written all over this blackened death metal tome and I can see this band rising high in the ranks of the UK’s extreme metal scenes, so I look forward to hearing what they do next. An excellent job, Soulphernus.
