WAR MUSIC, the fifth studio album from Swedish punk/hardcore icons Refused is out today and available here.

WAR MUSIC is not an indulgent record by any measure. The creativity and pure craft that this band is capable of has been put to use boiling the material down to its vital ingredients. While many of their genre-peers are evolving in accordance with their progressive and/or art-rock forebears, Refused have delivered the most concise and lethal submission to their oeuvre so far.

They really are songsmiths of the highest order, working in a genre not cluttered with them. In a parallel universe where Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe were teenage metalheads, this is what the Pet Shop Boys would have sounded like. Everything that made the band’s music so arresting in the past is on display here, but those strengths, those powers, are utilized solely in service of the songs. Every track packs concussion-inducing punches in its riffs and arrangements, plus devastating one-liner vocal hooks. The bands “knack for drama” and “ability to roar with sudden, utter ferocity” (to quote one reviewer) has been brought into focus.  But like with all truly great punk records it’s a miniature drama. A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it chamber piece that, while it will start circle pits enough to power a small town in the coming years, also rewards a closer read.

“We’ve been trying to make this record since we started”, the band says, “and it feels like we finally cracked the code”.

Formed in Umeå, Sweden in 1991, hardcore-punk legends Refused are one of the most influential rock bands of the early ‘00s. Artists as diverse as  Linkin Park, Rise Against, Steve Aoki, Paramore, Thursday, Dillinger Escape Plan, Blink-182, and AFI have been heavily cited crediting the release as being a fundamental influence on their musical styles. That album has become a cultural touchstone for the entire post-hardcore generation as the year zero of stylistic genre-bending – utilizing electronics, jazz and slick production for the first time – their reputation tent-poled by politically radical lyrics and solidified by their energetic live shows to spread their message.

After a 14-year pause, the band reunited in 2012 playing much anticipated shows like mainstream festival Coachella and were subsequently awarded the “Special Prize for Music Exports” by the Swedish Ministry of Trade in 2013.  In 2015, they released their fourth studio album ‘Freedom’ which was recorded with Nick Launay (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Killing Joke), while also turning to Swedish pop/producer Shellback –whose credits include Taylor Swift and Britney Spears –for the lead single “Elektra”.

Refused is officially the sound and voice of much anticipated video game Cyberpunk 2077’s “house band” SAMURAI!

Out today – ‘War Music’ is their fifth full-length studio album and will be accompanied by a worldwide concert tour.
