‘Primary Colours PT.II: The Blue’ is the third album by Italian Stoner Rock/Post Rock group Banana Mayor, and it is quite bananas how this band come across to this critic.
If I were to sum up this album in one word it would be: forgettable. I’m sorry if any of the band’s members or die-hard fans are reading this, but nothing original seemed to spring out at me as I gave this piece a whirl.
At first, when I put it on there were some good riffs that reminded me a bit of Electric Wizard – the only Stoner band I would go out of my way to listen to – but after a while, I was lost somewhere on the audible road of psychedelia infused strings and some vocals that harken back to the heyday of Alternative Rock; somewhere in the mid-nineties.
Trying in vain to give it something to score it on, ‘The Blue’ seems to be made up of everything that has made Stoner Rock a very unappealing genre to my ears. It goes on for too long and if you’re easily distracted by things around you, then I can’t say this was a good enough release as I wasn’t hooked.
Though if I were to mention this band to any peers who like psychedelic rock music, I’d suggest adding these guys to your collection as they did remind me a small amount of The Doors and I could see guys into Church of the Cosmic Skull digging this, but sadly not me.
Banana Mayor might be appealing to some but to me, they are no Cybernetic Witch Cult. If the songs are meant to be about weird topics or out-of-this-world ideas achieved through recreational drug use, then it hasn’t come to my attention. This album was, unfortunately, one I couldn’t wait to be over.
