Review:

Blight are a black metal band on Svart Records, who formed in 2008 and who will be releasing their debut LP ‘Temple of Wounds’ on 5th June, 2020. It will be available worldwide on Vinyl, CD and Digital formats. In a collective statement, the band say ‘Some bands are very productive, pumping out albums regularly. Yet others take their time, allowing the work to evolve slowly and surely. What matters most, though, is the result.’ ToW is one of those albums that is extremely well thought out. Furthermore, everyone involved with the project played a significant part in the writing process.

Like many of the songs in ToW, ‘Dar Akh Qayin’ has some (very) dark, classical-inspired distorted harmonies. The progression and whispers in that track in particular, kind of resemble ‘Language for Bliss’ by avant-garde doom metal band, Unholy, at times. That’s not exactly the most well known song in the world, so that could be a coincidence. Whatever the case, the ideas almost come out of nowhere offering a twisted kind of excitement. The way they contrast with the previous moderately paced, death/black chunky riffing is quite intriguing. They don’t come across as thoughtless in any way whatsoever. The same kinds of clever surprises are found throughout the album.

That’s not to say this album is unique, let’s not get carried away, here. In fact this stuff is very typical in many ways. You get the screams, tremolo picked guitars and blast beats as basically always. That doesn’t matter too much though, as this release is crammed full of subtle developments, rhythmic changes, adventurous chords and tons of drama. And don’t go thinking the music sounds in any way fragmented or tasteless, because that’s far from the case. Even the more epic song ‘Before the Monolith’ which lasts for 7 minutes is oozing with consistent professionalism. 

In conclusion, Blight are nothing new. Far from it. However, they are experts at what they do and most old-school black metal fans simply wouldn’t be able to ask for any more, I’m sure. There are death metal, doom and even prog influences as well, all contributing to a fascinating sound, though more adventurous people or hardened veterans looking for a change may find the music a little safe. Kind of obvious, that observation, but it’s good to be clear, isn’t it? Anyway, give it a listen if you don’t think bands like Immortal have released enough music!
