Unfathomable Ruination are a death metal band from London, who will be releasing their new EP ‘Decennium Ruinae’ on 28th May, 2021 through Willowtip Records. It will be available on CD Digipak, vinyl LP and digital formats. To celebrate ten years of playing together, the band are unleashing three brand new tracks and a re-recorded version of one of their greatest early cuts ‘Suspended in Entropic Dissipation’. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Samuel Turbitt at Ritual Studios, with Daniel Herrera and Ross Piazza. 

What can I say? Riffs. With this album, you get riff after riff after riff. Or rather you get them forced down your throat by some brutal maniac. Not exactly unusual for the genre, and little on offer here is. There ARE obvious and frequent highlights, I really like it when the drummer goes ape s**t on the snare for one thing, and the whole performance is very wild and human. (You don’t get that computer perfected nonsense, here). But there are tons and tons of scales out there. Too many to mention. Why do UR have to rely on everyday chromatic ideas, so much? Having said that the sheer number of such riffs on offer at least partially makes up for things for those who are more intellectually curious. (More typical fans won’t care about the tried and tested formula). Even though you get thrown so many patterns, the sound isn’t underdeveloped but rather classic, complete insanity. 

Ok, ok, ok, I was being at least a little bit unfair, earlier. Sure this is far from anything new, but at the end of the day, full harmonies based on the ultra obscure Ionian b5 scale for example, are unlikely to ever sound good and accessible in a death metal context. (Though strange and exotic single note riffs are easier to work with). UR seem to be trying to be as intense as possible, and the way they don’t sound weird and over the top (ok, they will to people who aren’t fans of death metal – some rather ignorant people laugh at the genre -_-) should be respected. It’s easy to sound silly when being so extreme. The last track on the album ‘Disciples of Pestilence’ has a more melodic death metal sound in places, and then out of nowhere you get absolutely bombarded with more non stop changes of mental guitar parts. 

In conclusion, UR have done nothing new whatsoever. BUT this is as good a thrill fest as almost anything out there. I’m genuinely having a hard time thinking of bands who are more extreme, yet still relatively easy to get into. (That’s in contrast with some goregrind bands that just sound demented). All I can really think of is Anaal Nathrakh. So yeah, slight increases in tempo during the UR performances are very effective at pumping the adrenaline, in a way computers never can. The album is pure madness from start to finish with hints of tech death thrown in (but there are more sophisticated bands out there), and it’s hard to ask for much more if you want to have some plain old fun without putting your thinking cap on. This stuff is recommended, but you’re just a little better checking out Cannibal Corpse’s stuff first if you haven’t already. Then again, what kind of DM fan doesn’t know them??
